Guthrie Racing Takes 6th Straight King of the Hammers Title

Mitch Climbing The Sand Hill
Mitch Climbing The Sand Hill

This year Hammerking dropped qualifying for UTV and went to a draw. For the first year Mitch Guthrie was starting deep in the field. Many talented and capable machines lined up out front and hungry to end his streak.

The first 23 miles on this race are wide open desert. Its critical to be one of the first 4 guys through Crowbar at RM24. A bottle neck here could change the race. One by one Mitch passed machines on his way to the front. The Walker Evans shocks and Nelson&Nelson sway bar kept the RZR planted and predictable in the large desert whoops. Pulling into Crowbar they were 4th. A small bottle neck had formed and they were able to pick a spot. Sims and Miller were out front and Mitch was trailing close in 3rd.

“We passed Miller in the desert, Sims was still out front but we were closing on him fast”. They ripped into the main pit and the crew got them out fast. Thus far they were running a perfect race, no flats or any issues to speak of. Now they were moving into the rock sections and this is where all the prerunning would pay off. Mitch Jr was able to stay planted in his seat while Mitch Sr worked his magic. They caught Sims in the middle of highway 20 and followed him for a bit. They got around Sims on Fisher mountain and moved into first. They held the lead down Sledgehammer and into Jack. In Jack a winch race broke out. Guthrie vs Sims in the great winch off. Sims was able to edge Mitch out over the summit.

Just before dropping into Chocolate Thunder Sims was pulled off with a flat. “We made a pass and moved back into 1st.” They shot right up Chocolate and into Wrecking Ball. At the top our team radioed us that 2nd was out. Guthrie had a 30 minute lead over the 2nd place machine. “We kept a smooth pace and made sure to be easy on the car”. Up and over the sand hill on lap 2 and into Hammertown. Guthrie Racing took the checkered flag and marked the 6th time Mitch Guthrie would be crowned KING.

Team DWO Racing BITD Blue Water Parker 425

After several weeks and many long hours the Team DWO Racing Ford Ranger was ready to do battle at the 2015 Best in the Desert Blue Water Parker 425 on Feb 6th thru the 8th in Parker AZ. Todd Douglas, Mark Acuna Sr, Mark Schleipfer and Steve Boozer were all set to tackle this race course. Each lap was close to 150 miles and our class was set to do 2 laps in the 1800 Sportsman class.

Off the starting line and on the first lap were Todd Douglas driving and Mark Acuna Sr. navigating the #1871 Ford Ranger. They had a great lap with no issues, the truck was running great and Todd was making good time getting the truck into the 2nd place position in our class. There was a little rubbing when the McMillians made a pass but all was good. It was a rough course and all the hard work paid off as the truck did its job.

On the second lap Mark Schleipfer was driving and Steve Boozer was navigating. We had a good lap going until RM109 when the rear bearing on our alternator failed and it locked up and caught on fire. After pulling off the race course, putting the fire out, assessing the damage we quickly had, thanks to our pit crew and BITD, a new alternator was on its way to us and we started to remove the old one. We were running in 2nd place at that time. While we were down the 3rd place truck #1818 had caught up and passed us moving them to 2nd. Shortly after that our new alternator showed up we got on our way. At RM126 we got word that we were 1 mile behind the 2nd place truck #1818 and a race broke out. Approximately 10 miles from the finish line we were able to catch the 2nd place truck bumping him to 3rd and we crossed the finish line as the 2nd place winner in our class.

This was our first race of the 2015 season and Team DWO Racing is off to a great start. The truck looked awesome with all the sponsor logos and at the last minute we were able to get team crew shirts printed. We had over 30+ friends and family that volunteered their time to help support us at this race and we thank each and every one of them for all of their help.

Team DWO Racing would like to thank all of our sponsors who without the support with some of the BEST products in the industry, we would not be able to follow our dream to race, so big THANK YOU to;

Katie Vernola King of the Hammers Recap

See a full race recap and photo gallery at UTVunderground.com

February 4th was the King of the Hammers race presented by Polaris RZR. My stepdad and I were ready to take on one of the toughest UTV races in the world. 53 UTV’s signed up in the pro and sportsman class. KOH drew starting positions and we got lucky starting on the pole in the Sportsman class. I was co-dawg for this race which means I had to navigate the 125 mile race course and spot through the tougher rock sections winching our way out of giant rock hills. We started the race about 34 out of 53 overall being sent off the starting line side by side every 30 seconds. When the green flag dropped we hit some jumps leaving hammer town to be quickly stopped at our first hill climb. One UTV was blocking the first trail and we took a higher line which lead us around the jam and right up the hill. From race mile 3-6 we hit the dry lake bed going about 70 mph where a helicopter followed just feet above us leading into the first pit stop. In the pits the American Rock Rods crew did a quick check of the rzr and sent us back out for the rest of lap 1 (roughly 40 miles). After a couple rock hills we managed to pass a few utvs that got stuck behind other cars. Around race mile 40 I called the main pit in hammer town letting them know we are coming into the pits, the rzr 1000 felt good and was still in good condition. As we passed through the start/finish line coming into the main pit for gas and a quick check, we quickly realized we were running in the top 10 overall. Keeping a constant speed we hit our next climb called aftershock at race mile 63. A loud snap quickly ended our day with a front broken diff. Very bummed on losing 4wd but was very happy for our first King of the Hammers race.

Mike Gardner Leads Wire to Wire at WORCS Round 1

Summary courtesy of GMH Motorsports & Fatography

Gardner built a new machine for 2015. He looked to Holz Racing Products because of their complete domination over the years. He knew he wanted a very light and strong machine to tackle these very harsh conditions. The Holz team builds some of the best cars you will find. If it does not serve a purpose it’s removed.

“I love racing in taft!” Mike said at the start line of round 1. “There’s nothing like hitting a 100ft step up with RJ37 on your bumper while flying through the air.” After the dust settled from the land rush start Mike found him self of the bumper on the #37 machine. Knowing there was a stacked of field of racers chasing him down he kept the peddle smashed.

Mike held 2nd until the second lap when he lost a font diff. “I took a deep breathe and gave it everything I had!” Holding a steady pace and working his way through broken machines Mike was able to keep him machine running and pulled of a big win. “It was so intense having to find that happy medium of hammering the throttle as I’m trying not to get the back end lose.” This win would not have been possible without great sponsors and a solid team supporting him.
