Whether you’re spending the weekend on the trails, heading out to the desert, or building a UTV for competition, the right harness can make a big difference in how secure and comfortable you feel behind the wheel.
With different harness configurations, belt widths, and buckle styles available, choosing one can get confusing fast. That’s where this guide comes in.
PRP offers harnesses designed for a range of off-road applications, from recreational riding to competition. Instead of telling you which harness to buy, we’re breaking down the differences so you can understand your options and find the setup that fits your ride.
A harness is designed to help keep you properly positioned in your seat while driving. Unlike a standard three-point seat belt, a multi-point harness uses separate shoulder and lap straps to help keep you secured and centered in the seat. PRP harnesses are available in 4-point and 5-point configurations, with different buckle and belt-width options depending on the application.
The right harness is only part of the equation. Proper installation, fitment and adjustment are critical. Always follow the installation instructions provided with your harness and vehicle, and make sure your setup is appropriate for your specific application.
Uses two shoulder straps and two lap straps to secure.
PRP 4-point harnesses are designed with recreational driving in mind and are available with Auto-Buckle and Latch & Link buckle systems.
Depending on the model, they are available with 2-inch or 3-inch straps.
PRP offers removable fifth-point options on several harnesses, giving riders additional restraint and helps keep the lap belt positioned properly during hard impacts.
5-point configurations are also commonly used in competition applications, and PRP’s SFI 16.1-certified race harnesses are built specifically for racing.
Once you’ve narrowed down the number of points, you’ll need to consider strap width.
2-inch straps are narrower and generally offer a lighter, more flexible feel. They’re a popular choice when ease of adjustment and flexibility are priorities, and PRP offers both recreational and race harnesses using 2-inch straps.
3-inch straps provide a broader contact area across the body and are available on several PRP 4-point and 5-point harness configurations. They’re an option for riders looking for broader belt coverage and a more substantial feel.
The buckle is another major difference between harnesses. The best choice often comes down to how you use your vehicle and how quickly you want to get in and out.
Designed for quick, simple operation.
PRP’s Auto-Buckle harness uses a one-hand push-button release and 2-inch lap, and shoulder straps.
Flat, traditional-style buckle system designed for secure connection and straightforward operation.
PRP’s current Latch & Link lineup includes both 4-point and 5-point configurations, with 2-inch and 3-inch options
Designed around fast, ergonomic operation with a twist-and-thumb-release buckle.
Featured in PRP’s race harness lineup.
If you’ve started shopping for a racing harness, you’ve probably seen SFI 16.1 listed in the product name.
SFI 16.1 is a safety standard used for competition restraint systems.
PRP offers harnesses that are specifically certified to SFI 16.1 for racing applications. If you’re purchasing a harness for competition, don’t assume that any 5-point harness meets your race requirements. Check the rules for your organization, class, and vehicle to determine what certification and configuration are required..
