UTV DESERT SEASON PREPARATION CHECKLIST | PRP Seats

Fuel Up, Gear Up, Send It: UTV Desert Season Checklist

Safety Starts Here.

Before heading out for the season, take some time to check your UTV, safety equipment, and gear. A quick inspection can help you catch worn parts, loose hardware, or missing equipment before they become problems on the trail. Use this checklist to prepare your vehicle, your passengers, and everything you’re bringing along for your next desert ride.

1. CHECK YOUR HARNESSES AND SEATS

Your harnesses and seats are some of the most important parts of your UTV’s occupant setup, so start there.
Inspect your harnesses for cuts, fraying, or other damage. Check the buckles, adjusters, mounting points, and hardware, and make sure everything is working properly. Then, sit in the seat and check the fit. Your harness should be adjusted snugly, with the straps sitting in the proper position and free of twists.
Take a close look at your seats, too. Check the seat material, suspension components, mounting hardware, and brackets for signs of wear or damage.

QUICK CHECK:

  • Harness webbing is in good condition
  • Buckles and adjusters work properly
  • Mounting hardware is secure
  • Harness fits properly and adjusts snugly
  • Seats and seat mounts are secure
  • Harness replacement dates are up to date

If you find damage or excessive wear, replace the affected equipment before riding.

2. GIVE YOUR UTV A ONCE-OVER

If your UTV has been sitting for a while, take a few minutes to check the basics before your first ride.
Start with the tires and wheels, then check the brakes, steering, and suspension. Check fluid levels, inspect the battery and electrical components, and look for leaks, loose hardware, or other visible damage.
Your owner’s manual should always be your primary reference for vehicle-specific maintenance and inspection requirements.

BEFORE YOU RIDE:

  • Check tire pressure and condition
  • Inspect wheels and lug nuts
  • Check the brakes
  • Check steering and suspension
  • Check fluid levels
  • Inspect the battery and electrical components
  • Check lights
  • Look for leaks or visible damage

If something doesn’t look or feel right, take care of it before heading out.

3. PACK THE ESSENTIALS

Desert riding means being prepared for changing conditions and unexpected situations. Keep the basics with you and make sure they’re easy to access.

CONSIDER CARRYING:

  • First-aid kit
  • Helmets and protective equipment
  • Food or snacks
  • Phone and backup power
  • Flashlight or headlamp
  • Basic tools
  • Tire repair equipment
  • Extra fluids appropriate for your vehicle
  • Recovery equipment appropriate for your vehicle and riding conditions
  • Owner’s manual

Recovery gear should match your vehicle and the type of riding you do. Check the ratings of your recovery equipment, inspect it for damage, and make sure you understand how to use it before heading out.

4. CHECK YOUR TIE-DOWNS

Your pre-ride preparation starts before you reach the trail. If you’re hauling your UTV, inspect your tie-downs before loading.
Look for cuts, fraying, damaged hardware, or other signs of wear. Make sure your tie-downs are properly rated for the application and secure the UTV and any loose equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD:

  • Inspect tie-down webbing
  • Check hooks, buckles, and hardware
  • Confirm the tie-down rating is appropriate
  • Check attachment points
  • Secure the UTV properly
  • Secure loose equipment

If a tie-down is damaged or worn, replace it before transporting your vehicle.

ARE YOU READY FOR DESERT SEASON?

A little preparation before a ride can go a long way. Check your vehicle, inspect your safety equipment, organize your gear, and make sure you’re prepared for the unexpected.

And don’t forget about the people in the vehicle. Make sure everyone has the appropriate protective equipment, is properly restrained, and knows where the emergency and recovery gear is stored.
